Embedding Video

If your video file is hosted on a streaming video service such as YouTube or Vimeo then Millstream CMS has built-in support for embedding video without needing to use any embedding codes.

1. Embedding video inline within the Content Area

All Millstream CMS sites support directly embedding YouTube / Vimeo videos within a layout/content editing area of a page simply by creating a link to the source video file – without the need of any html embedding codes. While being significantly simpler, it also ensures the video will be embedded and scaled proportionally to automatically match the layout of the page.

The steps are as follows:

1. Simply view the video on YouTube or Vimeo, and if the current URL format matches the list below, you can use this URL to directly embed the video in Millstream CMS.

We currently support the following YouTube and Vimeo URLs:

  • https://www.youtube.com/embed/{video-id}
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v={video-id}
  • https://youtu.be/{video-id}
  • https://vimeo.com/{video-id}
  • https://player.vimeo.com/{video-id}

2. On a new line, enter some ‘dummy’ text where you would like the video to appear - we suggest using the title of the video – for example "Matilda Bay Time Lapse".

Note: On the public website, this text will be hidden and replaced by the embedded video

3. Next, select the text you just entered and choose the  'Insert/edit Link' button in the toolbar as shown below

Note: You must select all the text on a line – if you only make part of the text a link to the video, Millstream CMS will assume you wish to output a link to the video, and not embed it.

4. Enter the link to the Vimeo video page in the  Url field as shown below:

Note: The Rel field should be left as None. For SEO and accessibility reasons, a descriptive title should be added in the Title field.

5. Select the  Ok button, then  Save the page.
When you preview the page, your video should now be embedded.

Millstream CMS will automatically connect to Vimeo or YouTube to make sure the embedded video is the correct size and proportions. The video will display at the correct proportions as large as possible within the content area.

Note: If the video is marked as private on Vimeo or YouTube, embedding may be disabled completely or Millstream CMS may not be able to determine the correct size and proportions, Millstream CMS will embed the video at the default sizes for your site (typically 16:9 ratio). Please contact support if this needs to be adjusted.

See (3) below for more information on setting permissions.

2. Video Plugin

For sites with access to the video plugin, you can set an entire editing area to display a video.

The video will fill the maximum width of the region or page column that it is placed into - this will override the natural video dimensions and proportions, so in many cases, use the first method above to embed video is more appropriate.

The method for editing regions with the  display type menu is to choose display 'Video' and then paste the video link obtained from YouTube or Vimeo into the field provided as shown below.

Save and preview the page, your video should now be embedded.

3. Potential Problems

Videos can have permissions set to restrict viewing for a variety of purposes. Sometimes this will be licensing purposes and other times for privacy purposes. If you own the video content then you can adjust these to ensure the video can be embedded successfully.

In Vimeo the permission settings are shown below. If your video is giving an error message it's likely to do with permissions. Just get in touch with us if you are unsure and we can look into it. Trying to embed a YouTube video? See the linked article to resolve the problem whereby "Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner".
